Placing child protection at the core of sustainable travel and tourism
Rethinking travel and tourism
As the travel and tourism sector recovers from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an urgent need to ensure that this revival does not come at the expense of child protection. The sector plays a vital role in global development, but it also presents significant risks, including the exploitation of children by offenders moving across borders or as a result of the sector's operations. Sustainable tourism must prioritize the safety and well-being of children, integrating freedom from violence as a fundamental aspect of sustainability. Without addressing these issues, it is impossible to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Accelerating Efforts to Safeguard Children in Travel and Tourism
While significant strides have been made to protect children within the travel and tourism sector, much more needs to be done at a faster pace. The establishment of global frameworks, such as the Framework Convention on Tourism Ethics and the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation, provides a strong foundation. However, comprehensive and proactive measures are needed, including enhanced law enforcement collaboration, stronger regulatory oversight, and increased industry accountability. By scaling up these efforts and incorporating child protection into every aspect of tourism, we can create a truly sustainable and safe travel environment for all.
