SRSG Santos Pais welcomes launch of academic Global Report 2017 Ending Violence in Childhood

New York, 26 September 2017 - The launch of the new Global Report 2017 Ending Violence in Childhood, issued on September 26 by the international learning initiative Know Violence in Childhood is an important contribution to our understanding of the scale and impact of violence in childhood based on a critical review of research and data from across regions. We welcome the launch of this important academic report and are confident it will help to stimulate further research and action to help ensure all children grow up free from violence and enjoy a genuine opportunity to develop to their full potential.

In 2006, the UN Study affirmed that no violence against children is justifiable and all violence is preventable, and made a clear set of recommendations to accelerate progress towards bringing it to an end. One key recommendation of the Study was the need for consolidation of national data systems and research to monitor progress and inform evidence based policy on the prevention and response to violence against children. Promoting the strengthening of national data and research has been a priority of the SRSG since the beginning of her mandate. The adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and its historic target 16.2 has given renewed impetus to efforts to expose the extent of violence in children's lives and identify effective strategies to end these violations of children's rights.
